Generators for Home Usage
Just like we do not think much about our teeth as long as they do not give us pain, most of the home owners never care much for a major part of their household-the electricity-as long as they get steady supply of this commodity. But in this age of extraordinary dependence on electricity, the power shortage even for a short while may prove to be too expensive. But you can avoid any losses due to a power outage by simply investing in a home electric generator.
If you have thought that generators have uses only in the construction sites or camping spots, then you are miserably wrong. Having a home generator not only saves you in natural disasters, they help you carry on with your normal routine in an uninterrupted way in case of a severe power shortage in your locality. The benefits of having home generators are evident from their soaring sales curve in the recent times. There are several sizes and types of home generators available in the market to support you through your individual needs.
The generators need some fuel to produce power which then is transformed into electricity. Depending on the fuel they use, the generators may be of different types: Diesel generator, gasoline generator, natural gas generator or propane generator. Construction wise, the generators can be divided into two broad types: stand by generators and portable generators. The stand by generators becomes the permanent feature of a household, being permanently hardwired to the household's electrical system.
They are meant to provide automatic power back up during the power outage. They usually draw fuel from city gas or propane line. The portable generators are the smaller versions of home generators and armed with built- in fuel tank, they can be used to power the essential equipments in the remote locations where there is no electric supply. Like standby generators they also come to the help at the times of power outage by supplying power to the household appliances.
However, they are designed to run for a shorter stretch of time-maximum few hours at a stretch. When you are using home generator, you have to keep certain safety guidelines in mind. While purchasing home generator make sure that the unit comes with all kinds of safety features. These safety features will protect you against injuries and also protect the generator itself from getting damaged.
The constructions of good quality generators make them shut down automatically in case they have worked too hard; got overheated or lost oil pressure. In addition to that you should look for such qualities in a portable generator as large fuel tanks to ensure best running time, a fuel indicator, and multiple receptacles so that several appliances can draw power from it. If you are going to buy standby generator, make sure that it comes with solid steel or aluminum enclosures, emits minimum noise and adhere to the standard emissions regulations.
